TOEFL (Test of English as a foreign language) is the American testing system for proving your level of English language, acknowledged in most of the countries in the world. TOEFL has been developed and is managed by Educational Testing Service American Company (ETS). ETS is nongovernmental organization that is located in Princeton, state New-Jersey. The main aim of TOEFL is to estimate level of English of those for whom English is not their native language. TOEFL has been developed for American and Canadian colleges and universities to have an opportunity to evaluate professional English level of foreign students who wish to study in USA or Canada.

The test was introduced in 1964.
TOEFL certificate is essential document when your applying to foreign universities on MBA programs, when you need to get permission to probation in English or when you’re applying to job position that demands good English knowledge. TOEFL certificate is valid for 2 years.
The main feature of this test is that it is based on American English, so to pass it successfully you need to be good in its grammatical and lexical features that distinguish American English from British one.
Since 24th of September 2005 in USA the new format of test was launched. It is called TOEFL iBT (Internet-based Test). The previous version was TOEFL cBT (Computer-based Test). During 2006 all the countries switched to new format of test.
iBT abbreviation is interpreted as Internet-based Test. TOEFL iBT tests integrated skills. That means that grammar is examined not with the help of separate section but through the each section. Moreover, you will be examined on speaking skills. On-line registration as well as on-line score simplify the test.
Format changing of the test is intended to improvement of the applicant’s sore estimating system. New Speaking section will help to examine students’ ability to communicate in English which is important for studying in business school or college. New tasks in Writing section will help to estimate student’s ability to combine information.
As it was earlier TOEFL tests the main applicant’s skills. New test format consists of 4 sections: Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing sections. Test lasts for 4 hours.

New test version features are:
• Grammatical structures are estimated with the help of Speaking, Writing and Reading sections.
• Writing section. According to new TOEFL iBT format in this section you have to write 2 essays. One of them is the “integrated” task: you read a passage and then listen to a lecture on the same topic. Information from lecture either is at variance with passage information or supplements with it. While reading and listening you are allowed to make notes. You will have 3 minutes to read 200-220 words passage and 20 minutes to write a small 150-225 words essay.
• Reading section hasn’t been changed significantly except appearance of several new types of questions.
• In Listening section the first part of it (short dialogs) has been removed; two other parts are presented in the section: long dialogs representing live common speech and four lections where two of them are accompanied with students’ comments.
• In contrast to old TOEFL format in the new one you’re allowed and even recommended to take notes in each section.
• New test format takes more time to take it that is why now there are now additional Tutorials part.
• Speaking section. This is the new section which contains 6 questions. Answering them you have to speak into a microphone. You are allowed to take notes!
