Analysіs of an Argument

Данная секция теста разработана с целью проверки вашей грамотности, умение логически обосновываться свою мысль и строить заключения. У вас будет 30 минут для того, чтобы дать оценку приведенной ситуации (что занимает приблизительно абзац). Выскажите вашу мысль по поводу данного утверждения с точки зрения логики и убедительности приведенного примера. Вы также не сможете выбирать вопросы сами.

Как выбираются темы

Компьютер произвольно выберет два вопроса с 280 возможных (всего 140 вопросов по каждой из секций - Analysіs of an Іssue и Analysіs of an Argument). ETS опубликовала все 280 вопросов на сайте www.gmac.com. Вот несколько примеров вопросов:

Analysіs of an Argument

• “Over time, the costs of processing go down because as organizations learn how to do things better, they become more efficient. In color film processing, for example, the cost of a 3-by-5-inch print fell from 50 cents for five-day service in 1970 to 20 cents for one-day service in 1984. The same principle applies to the processing of food. And since Olympic Foods will soon celebrate its 25th birthday, we can expect that our long experience will enable us to minimize costs and thus maximize profits.”

• “When the Apogee Company had all its operations in one location, it was more profitable than it is today. Therefore, the Apogee Company should close down its field offices and conduct all its operations from a single location. Such centralization would improve profitability by cutting costs and helping the company maintain better supervision of all employees.”

• “On average, middle-aged consumers devote 39 percent of their retail expenditure to department store products and services, while for younger consumers the average is only 25 percent. Since the number of middle-aged people will increase dramatically within the next decade, department stores can expect retail sales to increase significantly during that period. Furthermore, to take advantage of the trend, these stores should begin to replace some of those products intended to attract the younger consumer with products intended to attract the middle-aged consumer.”

In your view, to what extent should government or any other group be able to censor television or radio programs? Explain, giving relevant reasons and/or examples to support your position.

• “The people we remember best are the ones who broke the rules.”

Discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the opinion expressed above. Support your point of view with reasons and/or examples from your own experience, observations, or reading.

• “Although ‘genius’ is difficult to define, one of the qualities of genius is the ability to transcend traditional modes of thought and create new ones.”

Explain what you think the above statement means and discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with this definition of genius. In your discussion, be sure to include at least one example of someone who, in your opinion, exemplifies genius or a particular characteristic of genius.

• “Most people would agree that buildings represent a valuable record of any society’s past, but controversy arises when old buildings stand on ground that modern planners feel could be better used for modern purposes.”

In your opinion, which is more important—preserving historic buildings or encouraging modern development? Explain your position, using reasons and examples based on your own experiences, observations, or reading.

Как оцениваются ваши ответы?

Оценку вашим ответам дают преподаватели колледжей и университетов, большинство с который специализируются в области английского языка. Іssue essay будет оценивать один преподаватель, а Argument essay - другой. Ваши работы будут оцениваться по четырем критериям:

• Содержание (способность приводить убедительные аргументы и строить обоснованные заключения на основе логики и приведенных фактов);
• Форма (способность излагать свою мысль связно, четко и логически правильно);
• Язык (знание английского языка: стиль языка, использование слов и словарный запас);
• Грамматика (знание правил Standard Wrіtten Englіsh, включая грамматику и синтаксис, т.е. умение правильно построить предложение).

Преподаватели оценивают ваши эссе независимо друг от друга. На основании вышеизложенных критериев каждый преподаватель выставит вам оценку от 0 до 6 баллов. Критерии, используемые преподавателями, разработанные ETS. А ваша оценка будет представлять собой среднее арифметическое двух баллов, полученных за каждое эссе. Если выходит дробовое число (например, 4.1 или 4.4), то оно округляется.

Каждое ваше эссе будет оцениваться и компьютером (программа E-rater), включая грамматическую проверку, синтаксис, стиль языка, диалект, орфографию и пунктуацию - все, кроме содержания. Если разность между оценкой преподавателей и оценкой, сделанной компьютером, будет больше одного балла, то ваше эссе будет проверен еще раз другим преподавателем, и окончательная оценка будет средним арифметическим оценок, сделанных всеми преподавателями.
